Streamlining Compliance (catching up for unintentionally not filing for taxes) was a stressful task and long process. I must say that the entire Bright!Tax team was always kind and helpful, and answered my questions in depth and with clarity - and I had tons of questions! I particularly communicated with Marina and Laura, (sometimes with William and Katelynn) and everyone's knowledge and mastery of their subject was reassuring. If I were to make a single suggestion it would be that Bright!Tax should be faster in responding to international clients’ queries and insure increased diligence to avoid compounding additional issues due to slow or delayed answers. This happened occasionally, but all in all is a minor issue compared to the quality of their services.

I came to Bright!Tax with a fairly complicated tax situation. After living abroad for many years, I needed to bring my US tax filings up to date through the Streamlined procedure, while dealing with income, accounts, inheritance, and assets in several different countries. To make matters more daunting, I started the process with very little knowledge of the US tax system. Before choosing Bright!Tax, I did quite a bit of research and carefully vetted them against three other firms offering similar expat tax services. I spoke and corresponded with the different companies, compared their approaches, services and costs, and ultimately decided that Bright!Tax seemed to be the best fit. Having now gone through the process with them, I'm very glad, and completely relieved, I made that choice. The process begins with an extremely detailed questionnaire. I won't pretend it isn't tedious — it is! In my case, there were years of financial information, foreign accounts, property transactions and other matters to document. But as I worked my way through it, I began to appreciate just how comprehensive and well thought out the process is. It forces you to gather and organize everything that might possibly be relevant and gives the tax professionals a remarkably complete picture of your circumstances. What impressed me particularly was what happened after I finally pressed the button and submitted that questionnaire. This wasn't simply a matter of uploading a pile of information and waiting for some tax returns to appear. There was a genuine back-and-forth with my tax preparer and client services. My tax team came back with detailed follow-up questions whenever something needed clarification or further documentation. At the same time, whenever I had questions of my own, I received clear, patient and understandable answers. That was especially important to me because I began this process almost completely ignorant of the US tax system. I never felt that I was expected to understand complicated tax terminology or somehow already know what information was important. Things were explained in a way I could understand, and, somewhat unexpectedly, I learned a great deal about my own tax situation and the US tax system along the way. Rather than feeling lost or intimidated by the process, I gradually became comfortable with it and understood why various questions were being asked and why particular documents were needed. The client service throughout the process was excellent — professional, responsive, patient and reassuring. Dealing with years of US taxes from abroad and going through the Streamlined procedure can seem overwhelming, particularly when your financial affairs span several countries. Bright!Tax took something I had been dreading and turned it into a structured, understandable and ultimately very manageable process. Having now reached the other side of it, I'm very pleased that I took the time at the beginning to compare Bright!Tax carefully with the other firms. I feel I made the right choice. For other Americans living abroad who have fallen behind with US filing requirements, or simply feel overwhelmed or confused by the US tax system, I would recommend Bright!Tax without hesitation.
