Misleading Labeling and Incomplete Ingredient Information
I have been buying lactoferrin from another company for nearly 20 years, but decided to try Double Wood, because I was impressed by the fact that it gives COAs for each product, and is also GMP certified. Customer service, when I called with a question, also was excellent. Here's why only two stars: 1) I learned from the CSR, when I asked what form of lactoferrin was used, is that it is is a combination of forms--one containing iron, and one without iron. In fact, the type without iron is preferred especially for people who may be susceptible to metabolic iron overload (hemochromatosis). The bottle does NOT say that the product contains iron, and it should. Apo-lactoferrin (without iron) is the preferred form. 2) The front label of the product says 250 mg, 60 capsules, leading one to assume that each capsule contains 250 mg of lactoferrin. But in tiny letters, it says "per serving." If you look at the ingredients, you see that one serving consists of TWO capsules. In other words, that 60 capsule bottle is only enough for one month. I consider this misleading and dishonest, since most people don't bother to read the small print, and since the lactoferrin sold by other companies (notablly Jarrow Formulas) contains 250 mg of APO-LACTOFERRIN per capsule. This means that Double Wood is actually charging twice as much per bottle as one would think. I gave it two stars because I'm sure it's a good product, so a single star (which is really a zero) would not have been appropriate. But I would never recommend this product, nor others that label their products in a misleading way by putting "per serving," meaning multiple capsules needed, on the front, instead of the actual amount per capsule (in this case 125 mg) in each capsule. I'm a nutrition consultant, and for these reasons, I will not be doing business with this company in the future.
