I don't write many negative reviews
I don't write many negative reviews, but after nearly 50 years in the automotive repair business, I feel other technicians and shop owners should know about our experience with Mac Tools. My relationship with Mac goes back approximately 47 years. My father bought my very first professional tools from a Mac distributor when I was learning the trade in his shop. I still own many of those tools today. Unfortunately, since moving to Dunnellon, Florida, consistent Mac representation has been almost nonexistent. Over the years we've had numerous distributors come and go, often lasting only a few months, followed by long periods with no Mac representative at all. Most recently, we went close to 10 years without one. When we finally had a distributor again, we were glad to see Mac back. After about 16 months, however, he stopped visiting our shop without saying anything. When one of my technicians contacted him, the distributor explained that he had only sold about $700 in tools to our shop while replacing $3,000–$4,000 in warranty tools, which he said he was "not obligated to warranty because I didn't sell them." He also concluded that we simply weren't interested in Mac Tools. That was particularly disappointing because I personally purchased approximately $1,000 in tools from him that apparently weren't included in his estimate. More importantly, many of the tools being warrantied accumulated during years when Mac Tools failed to provide us with a consistent distributor. Lifetime warranty coverage is part of what justifies paying premium prices for professional tools. The customer bought a Mac Tool—not a tool from a particular distributor. I believe the warranty should follow the Mac name. What disappointed me most, however, was Mac Tools Corporation's response. Before posting anything publicly, I wrote the company a detailed and respectful letter explaining our experience, my nearly five-decade history with the brand, and my concerns. I never received a response. I have no issue with a distributor deciding that a particular route or stop isn't financially worthwhile. I do have an issue with longtime customers being viewed as a liability for asking a company to stand behind the lifetime warranty that helped sell those tools in the first place. After 47 years of loyalty to Mac Tools, I expected better—not only from the distributor, but especially from the company whose name is stamped on the tools.
