Three Defective Vacuums in 4 Years — Oreck/Hoover/TTI Has Contempt for Its Customers
In May 2021 I paid $299 for an Oreck POD cordless vacuum directly from Oreck.com. What followed is a four-year case study in how a company can systematically fail a customer at every single turn. Day one: already bad. I contacted Oreck the same day I purchased the POD — not to complain, but to add to my order. They took four days to respond. By then it was too late. My first email to them ended with: "Terrible customer service." Vacuum #1 fails. By September 2021, the POD was defective — powering off during use, chronic clogging, falling apart at the handle. I reported it. Vacuum #2 arrives — also defective. Oreck sent a replacement. Within weeks I wrote back: "I have a similar concern with the replacement. The pipe coming out of the motor/head is loose. I am concerned that it will break like the last one." Oreck's response was to tell me to go to a retail dealer, David's Vacuums, for a trade-in. A warranty customer with a defective replacement, told to go haggle at a store. The Oreck Elevate bait-and-switch. In January 2023, Oreck finally offered a proper replacement: the Elevate Control corded vacuum. I asked in writing to pay additional money for a higher model (Elevate Conquer or Discover). I then waited weeks for a return shipping label that never came. Vacuum #3 arrives without notice — a Hoover. In February 2023, a Hoover ONEPWR Blade MAX appeared at my door. No advance notice. No agreement. When I asked what was going on, Oreck confirmed in writing: "We had entered your preference in your case, but this is the Warranty replacement for an Oreck POD. We apologize that this is not the model you were expecting." They knew. They sent it anyway. The Hoover fails immediately. Within one use it was squeaking. I demanded a return label. Oreck refused in writing: "Since this is a Warranty replacement for your Oreck POD that is discontinued and is no longer available, we are unable to take it back for a different replacement unit." Trapped with a vacuum I didn't want, that didn't work. 2025: Hoover hose breaks. Warranty denied. I contacted Hoover support (ticket #23756721312), provided the full four-year paper trail, and obtained my original purchase receipt from Chase Visa. Hoover's response: "Your model is out of warranty... we will be basing on the original purchase regardless if the unit was a replacement." They backdated the warranty to May 9, 2021 — the original Oreck purchase. The Hoover they sent me in February 2023 carried no effective warranty at all. The bottom line: TTI Floor Care North America owns both Oreck AND Hoover. Three of their vacuums. None have lasted. I offered twice — years apart — to simply pay more for an Oreck corded model. Twice refused. I now have nothing to show for $299 and four years of documented correspondence. Avoid anything with an Oreck or Hoover label. Same parent company. Same contempt.
