I have known about Fastmail since the 1980s, when I ran a Cyrus email system at the University of Arizona and would note Fastmail postings on the Cyrus mailing list, often giving bug fixes. Since retiring in 2017, I had been using 'gmail', which I disliked hugely for its opaque nature, its ads, and its lack of privacy. I finally pushed myself to move my email provider to Fastmail and I have been delighted ever since. I recently needed their tech support to figure out why a particular address was bouncing. The tech response figured out the problem and I was pleased at the technical nature of the response and resulting discussion about why a delivery tool I used to check that the address was deliverable was giving an incorrect answer. As an oldtime Unix (and then Linux) hacker since about 1981, I just love the openness of Fastmail and its respect for privacy. and the kind of tech support Fastmail provides.

7 years and still works like it should
I've been using fastmail for about 7 years now. Its one of the few Sass tools, platforms, service providers that consistently works, that I dont have to spend have my life debugging or online with support. It just works like it is supposed to, hard to believe how rare that has become. I am grateful that something out there still delivers consistently. No bells and whistles just consistent and reliable.

Best email company
Superb support from George Allen at Fastmail. I accidentally deleted all my emails in a particular folder. They replied within a couple of hours or less with the solution. One happy customer and the reason why I have been with Fastmail since the year 2000.

Best email provider ever!
When my email provider of 20+ years "changed" to networksolutions.com, and I had to move my domain, my email failed for 8 days, in spite of repeated calls to customer support. Since I had a different domain with fastmail, I contacted them about my older domain, changed the nameservers with my registrar, and, with less than 5 minutes was getting email. This was also the service when I first began in Oct '25. Immediate response (in Australia daytime), and perfect service.
I will be a longtime customer!

Extremely fast and smooth experience
Extremely fast and smooth experience. Excellent JMAP API for developers. We needed a bespoke solution to build a customer help desk on top of and fastmail is crushing it. We also love the desktop app as well. Perfect for our needs so far. Great pricing too. All around 5 stars.

Unable to read emails...
"Unverified users also cannot see the contents of certain emails via our web interface. We block reading certain emails to prevent spammers and scammers from abusing our trial accounts to make spare accounts on other services. If you need to see the contents of these emails, please verify your account using SMS or become a paid member."
Even if you verify the account you would still unable to read emails.
Response from Fastmail· Apr 24, 2026
Hi Amine. That doesn't sound right! We definitely want you to be able to read your emails during your trial period. If you haven't already gotten in touch with our support team, we'd love to help. [email protected]

A Technologically Excellent Email Service That Still Makes Me Hesitate
I really want to like Fastmail because, from a technical perspective, the service looks extremely promising. The interface is clean, the app is great, the features are powerful, and things like masked email addresses are genuinely impressive. It feels like a very well-engineered product.
However, I have to admit that I’m quite concerned after reading multiple reports about account lockouts on platforms like Trustpilot and discussions on Reddit. When I was looking for user reviews, I came across these reports quite quickly. Of course, I cannot verify these individual cases, and I don’t know whether they are rare exceptions or more common than they seem. Still, the idea of potentially losing access to your own email account is very unsettling.
This concern is especially serious when using masked email addresses, since many other accounts may depend on that one mailbox. The thought of being locked out and possibly struggling to regain access creates a real sense of insecurity.
I fully understand that providers must prevent abuse and protect their systems from malicious use. At the same time, this also implies that accounts are being monitored in some way, even if only through automated systems, and that alone feels uncomfortable from a privacy perspective. So for me, the decision ultimately comes down to a trade-off between the technical excellence of Fastmail and my remaining privacy concerns, and at this point, I’m still not sure which side outweighs the other.
Technically, Fastmail seems excellent. My hesitation is purely about trust and risk management.
Additionally, having email storage located in Europe (or at least offering an EU-based data storage option) would be very reassuring, especially from a GDPR perspective. For many users, data location and legal jurisdiction are key factors when choosing an email provider.
Greater clarity in these areas would go a long way toward building confidence, because right now, the uncertainty is the biggest barrier for me. That said, I genuinely wish other email providers would offer the same level of technical polish and refinement that Fastmail clearly delivers.

Hi, B.M. Thank you for such a thoughtful and detailed review. Please allow us to share some details and hopefully provide some reassurance.
Accounts are locked for things like sending spam, fraud, or other activity that harms other people on the internet. If an account is ever locked incorrectly, the account holder can contact our support team. We'll ask a few questions to better understand the situation and investigate; if we're wrong, we'll quickly unlock with an apology. We're also transparent about how our staff access to customer data works. Check fastmail.help for "How Fastmail provides a secure service".
We do recommend using a custom domain for your email, so if you ever choose to leave Fastmail, you take your email address with you. You can use Masked Email with your custom domain, so even those Masked Email addresses can go with you wherever you go.
Your concerns about privacy in regard to abuse detection make sense. Every email provider scans emails automatically to catch spam and abuse. If they did not, they'd quickly become unusable and would get blacklisted by other providers for delivering spam.
Regarding data location, expanding our infrastructure to a new region involves significant technical and business considerations. It takes time to evaluate and build out new servers. We don't have any plans to announce at the moment, but please keep an eye on our blog. We'll post an update there should we add a data center in the EU.
We hope this helps clear things up. We recognize that email is the key to your digital life. One of our company's values is being good stewards of your data, and we take keeping your data secure very seriously. We'd love to address any remaining questions or concerns you may have in detail. Feel free to open a support ticket and reference this Trustpilot review, and we'll happily walk through anything that would help you feel more confident about being a Fastmail customer.
